I’ve had the Sharp LC-42SB45U TV for a while but I’ve recently moved from VGA to using an ATI 5970 in Windows 7 over HDMI. By using your timing values and creating my own custom edid override I was able to get rid of the horrible overscan and use dot by dot mode. Thank you for this information!!!

I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to overcome the overscan with modelines and configuration until I saw this post. Thank you so much for your notes. On the newer Sharp TVs there is a button on the remote “View Mode” that allows you to change it to Dot-By-Dot, Zoom, Stretch. That did the trick for me.

I am using a PC for an HTPC with XBMC. Hopefully, XBMC han an option in the Settings called “video calibration”. Here you can resize the image to get ride of the overscan issue.

Editor’s Note: Yes, you can do that, as long as you don’t mind lowering the resolution of the picture you watch, not to mention making your graphics hardware work harder. This is what NOT to do unless there is absolutely NO other way. I’ve seen it both ways and trust me, it’s worth the time and effort to do it right.

WOW! I’ve been living with the overscan for a year on my Mythbuntu system. This working absolutely perfectly. Thanks!
